Glenelg FC pitch

Glenelg FC win the big one!!

2014 winners of the Capital One £75K "grounds for improvement" competition.

The advert that started it all For Glenelg Football Club the 2014 season began with the best result they have ever had, and they never even had to kick a ball! It all began when veteran player and now club committee member Charlie MacDonald noticed an advert in the local newspaper. The Capital One “ground’s for improvement” competition with a £75,000 top prize and 10 prizes of £5.000 to give you local footy pitch a makeover. With geese regularly seen splashing in the smaller puddles and the local angling club talking of stocking trout in the larger ones, the Glenelg pitch has serious drainage problems and is virtually unplayable in long rainy spells. Charlie passed the application form to local entrepreneur Erica MacDonald who set off with the task of writing in less than 100 words why Glenelg deserved the prize.

With a little help from her friends the final wording was chosen:

Interviewing Donald John Macleod “The village of Glenelg, on the NW Coast of Scotland opposite the Isle of Skye, has a football pitch first established in 1931. The local football league covers Skye and the mainland. Our facilities are limited; the pitch, goal posts, marker, football strips, linesmen flags and a wee shed for storage!

Our players however are unlimited; in their individual fervour to keep the team alive, with many players travelling long distances each week to play. Our pitch has serious drainage issues and it would make a huge difference to local and visiting players and spectators if this was rectified”Training session with Tubes and Fenners!

And the winners are........GLENELG FC!

A few weeks later the shock news came, out of 1,500 applications........ we had won 1st Prize! A gobsmacked community then had the task of being involved with a film crew, celebrities, finding two teams of players and organising a crowd (on a weekday!) as they wanted to film an advert for theSky1 and Sky Sports channel To top it all we had to keep it a secret for several weeks!!

Filming begins!

Erica MacDonald interview - take 42!! On 18th March the film crew arrived along with Sky Soccer AM’s “Tubes and Fenners” (Peter Dale & John Fendley) and the following day filmed all day before being looked after. Glenelg style in The Inn with food, drink and a mega music session which they really appreciated (none of them turned up for breakfast in the morning!!) So what happens next? Come back and see as the work evolves……………

Glenelg FC old pitch

Work begins

Just incase you're wondering, the football pitch hasn't gone yellow due to a local drought or heat wave in Glenelg! It's a case of “out with the old” before excavation begins........

... another plough over before a second dose of weed killer...

... the heavy machinery moves in to scrape the top soil off...

... followed by piling it into the centre of the pitch prior to drainage work...

... finally the seed is sown, a brand new begining for Glenelg FC!
